Thespian Yousaf Khan, popularly known as Dilip Kumar is 97 today. Born on exactly this day in December 1922 in Peshawar city who could have imagined then that one day he will become the superstar of film industry of the sub_continent. Three generations of film heroes of the sub_continent sat at his feet and tried to emulate his style of acting but coming no where near to the perfection he had achieved in the art of acting.
He believed in quality rather than quantity and that was the precise reason why he worked only in 60 films in his film career spread over 60 years meaning thereby that on average he worked in not more than one film every year a far cry from the present day heroes who work in more than 60 films in 6 years time
Amitabachan once billed Dilip Kumar as the king of the under statement. Though he was described as king of tragedy, he performed comedy roles also with equal felicity. Films like Devdas, Gunga jamuna, Mughleazam, Daagh, Andaaz, Aadmi, Paigham, Azaad, Raam aur Shiyaam, Avidata, Dil Diya card list, Mashaal, Deedar, Tarana, Amar, Shabnam, Nadya ke paar, Naya Daur, Leader, Footpath, Aan, Mela, Kohinoor, to mention a few, in which Dilip Kumar worked are considered to be the classics of Bollywood.
Actors like him are a rare commodity who are born once in a blue moon. Dilip Kumar is in the autumn of his life spending the remaining days of his life silently in Mumbai of which he was once sherrif also.
