It is heartening to note that Moscow has shown its willingness to make heavy investments in the economic field of Pakistan. It is going to make Pakistan Steel Mills Karachi stand on its feet once again. It is a pity that successive rulers of this country since 1949 have been showing short-sightedness in this respect. They had placed all their eggs in the American basket and in the process damaged Pakistan’s relations with Soviet Union. Islamabad-Moscow relations touched their low during Zia’s regime.
In the Second World War Soviet Union , Western European countries and the U. S were in the same camp. After the war was over, the Western European countries alongwith the U.S took up the cudgels against communism which was being spearheaded by Moscow. It is precisely during this period when Pakistan too had gained independence. Pakistan had been in the vanguard when the Americans formed military pacts like SEATO, BAGHDAD PACT and CENTO in its Cold War against Moscow thus annoying Moscow to a great extent.
There was some improvement in our ties with Moscow when Z. A. Bhutto was in the saddle.
The changed political scenario in the sub-continent where New Delhi has started inclining more towards Washington has forced Moscow to reconsider its foreign policy also. Pakistan had better seize upon this opportunity, mend its fences with Russia. It is good that China and Russia are on the same page today and this also goes in our favour.
