It didn’t behove Lahore lawyers to ransack an hospital, burn a police van and beat up doctors and a minister. If utterances of any doctor had injured their sentiments the proper course for them was to have approached the Health ministry or lodge a report against him in the police station. Thanks to the TV footage of the incident the scenes of their hooliganism were duly recorded by the camera eye. The culprits from both the sides, the medicos and the lawyers need to be given a proper lesson by the courts so that recurrence of such incidents do not take place in future.
May one ask where was the district magistrate when this episode was taking place?Maintenance of law and order in the district is basically his responsibility. Did the CID and other intelligence gathering agencies inform him about the possibility of lawyers going to take the law into their own hands? If not, they need to be punished. If he was informed well in time then why did he not take remedial action for pre – empting the incident? The tragedy is that the postings of District magistrates have been highly politicised. The elected representatives to parliament play a major role in getting their blue-eyed boys appointed on this key administrative position. Time was when these positions were filled on merit and the best civil servants used to get posted as district magistrates and they enjoyed the confidence and respect of all sections of society and the people belonging to various shades of political opinion used to give their ear to them.
The erring lawyers must hang their heads in shame by breaking the law of the land.
