The recent clash between students of two different groups in a University in Islamabad the other day has come amid reports that some political parties want revival of students ‘unions in the educational institutions. Those charged with the task of maintaining law and order are extremely upset over this development and they fear that if the students unions were revived again in the educational institutions the law and order would once again go to the dogs. Those toying with this idea had better reconsider its pros and cons once again and shouldn’t take any decision on poste_haste which they might rue and regret one day before long.
The track record of the students’unions in this country leaves much to be desired. Experience of hindsight reveals that these unions were funded by the political parties from outside and they were used by the opposition whenever they wanted to politically blackmail any sitting government. Many parents don’t want their offspring exploited by the office bearers of this unions by bringing them on the streets and by going on strikes which only waste their precious time, besides, exposing them to the police lathi charge as a result of which sometimes they sustain serious injuries and become physically incapacitated also.
Extra _curricular activities , no doubt, are also necessary for the students community The question is that nobody has prevented them from taking part in college debates or taking part in various sports and athletic competitions as well as doing creative work like writing prose and poetry in college magazines or acting in stage dramas. Must they play stooges of the political parties by forming students ‘unions at their behest?
