More than one reason can be responsible for wheat crisis recently. First, it could have been due to massive export of this commodity without realising what would happen if it caused its scarcity in the country. It seems that this factor wasn’t kept in view with the result that the government had to waste a lot of previous foreign exchange for importing wheat in order to tide over this crisis. Has the government taken any action against those responsible for taking this insensible decision?
Second, possibility of heavy smuggling of this commodity to the neighbouring Afghanistan cannot be ruled out altogether.
It was blunder on the part of the concernced Food authorities to allow depletion of the wheat whatever the reason They should have ensured presence of sufficient wheat stock in the godowns for meeting any eventuality and must take the flak for it.
Tongues wag that the flour mills owners on both sides of the political divide in the country wield tremendous clout in the corridors of powers and they have scooped a fat gain in this wheat crisis.
TAILPIECE: Maulana Fazlur Rehman who is licking his wounds after his sit_in in the Federal capital didn’t pan out in accordance with his wishes is once again flexing his muscles and wants to have a go at the government one more time. He is now mincing no words about his displeasure over the lame_duck response given to his sut_in plan by other political parties, particularly, the PPP and PML(N).
