The performance of the present parliament is more or less the same as was of earlier three parliaments:the same quorum problem;the same indifference of the MNAs to its proceedings ;the same frequent absence of the ministers and the prime minister from the assembly sessions. One remembers the present PM having promised on taking oath of his office that he would be attending NA session atleast once a week to personally answer questions from the opposition members but , alas, he didn’t keep his word.
Let us admit that the quality of debate in parliament too has fallen down considerably. Time was when such well read persons like Mumtaz Daultana, Hussain Shaheen Suhurwardy, Chaudhry Mohammad Ali, Feroz Khan Noon, Khan Abdul Wali Khan , Khan Abdul Qaiyum Khan, Maulvi Farid, Baqi Baloch, Professor Ghafoor, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Ghaus Baksh Bizenjo, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto , Dr Mubashar Hasan and persons of their ilk, to mention a few, used to sit in parliament. They never indulged in loose talk against their political adversaries nor did they ever came to blows with one another on the floor of parliament or outside it. Most of them were men of impeccable financial honesty.
Most of the Assembly members that succeeded them in parliament pale in comparison when one compares them with the political stalwarts named above . More often than not, the forum of parliament looks like a fish market when its members shout at one another and start using fisticuffs . Such things were unheard of in the past.
Small wonder the common man is asking the question :Is it worth spending billions of taxpayers money on the so-called parliamentarians when they are good for nothing and instead of bringing relief to him have added to his economic miseries?
