There was no justification, whatever, on the part of the legislators of this country to demand increase in their pay scale and other emoluments keeping in view the financial crunch in the country. It seems that they were either out of touch with the economic ground realities obtaining in the country or they simply cared two hoots for the poor economic condition of teeming millions of the country who don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.
Granted that price spiral in the essential commodities has broken the back of all salaried classes of the country but it has been observed that every time government increased the salaries of the salaried class the black marketers too jacked up the price of essential goods so at the end of the day the increase in pay didn’t bring in any monetary relief for the common man as it was neutralised by galloping price index of the consumer goods. It is precisely for this reason that many economists don’t consider increase in pay as s panacea for this problem and they consider adopting better fiscal measures for controlling the price spiral in the consumer goods. Blackmarketing and hoarding of the essential commodities are the prime reason for skyrocketing increase in the price index of essential commodities . Side by side the menace of smuggling too creates scarcity of the edibles . These matters relate to good governance which , unfortunately, still is a far cry in this country . Unless the government comes down with a heavy hand on the hoarders and smugglers the market would never stabilise.
