New Delhi is in a fix over the recent peace accord between Washington and the Taliban for a variety of reasons. First, it fears that after coming to power, the Taliban might create hurdles in the way of New Delhi ‘s policy of forging close economic ties with the central Asian countries. Second they might allow a strong foothold to Beijing in Afghanistan. Third, in its own wisdom, India considers the Taliban as Pakistan’s creation and , therefore, looks at them with suspecting eyes.
India was, in its heart of hearts , unhappy over the success of talks between the Taliban and Washington that have lead to an accord between them. It , however, didn’t oppose the above-mentioned accord openly after it observed that Trump was very much enthusiastic to see it through and at the moment it could not afford annoying Washington.
The more the Indian influence is neutred in Afghanistan the better it would be for Pakistan as it is in the evidence that right from 1947 India has been sparing no opportunity to use the soil of Afghanistan for carrying out subversive activities in Pakistan through its agents in cahoots with the Afghan Rulers who have been playing second fiddle to New Delhi. Even the present Afghan leadership is favourably inclined to India rather than Pakistan.
Let us hope the Accord in question succeeds because in case of its failure this region will again plunge into a war which no body can afford , neither us, nor Afghanistan or for that matter even Washington DC.
