What a pity that the grey-haired, old political leaders in the two premier political parties of the country, long in the tooth and old enough to be called grandfather of Bilawal and Maryam Nawaz should be saying yes sir and yes madam to them. They should hang their heads in shame. They should have resigned as a protest instead of degrading themselves in the eyes of the electorate by allowing themselves to play second fiddle to them. Didn’t Zardari and Nawaz Sharif find a single person in their parties outside their family, worthy enough to take over reins of their party after they were gaoled? But why to blame only two of them. The condition in other political set-ups in the country is no better.
More or less the same situation prevails in other political parties barring one or two parties where a comprehensive Democratic system exists for election of party members on key administrative positions inside them. In more than ninty percent of our political parties, Dynastic politics is the order of the day. The heads of every party at the time of so- called intra party -election wangle appointment of their next of kin as their second in command so that when their time is up their mantle should pass on to them and their parties remain a family affair. Why is the Election Commission of Pakistan not taking note of this state of affairs and looking the other way is not understandable?
The question that arises is this: if political leaders cannot practise democracy inside their political parties how can they be expected to practise it in the country?
