There are some institutions in this country which had reached their zenith in late 1960s like PIA, GTS, Railways and Radio Pakistan, to mention a few. All of them have now touched their nadir.
Take for example, Radio. Till 1964 it was the major source of communication of government with the common man. Men of letters were associated with it by the radio authorities who made it a point that every word which was broadcast was correctly pronounced by radio artists whether he was a news broadcaster or a drama artist or a singer. Small wonder that the best programmes broadcast ever by radio Pakistan were produced during 1947 and 1964.The propaganda unleashed by the All India Radio and Radio Kabul against Pakistan was effectively counteracted by Radio Pakistan. A look at the best ever musical programmes recorded by Radio Pakistan in its history would reveal that they were produced between the same period.
Unfortunately, the emphasis of the rulers shifted from radio to TV after 1964 and a clear step motherly treatment meted out to radio by the government is visible .It is worth mentioning here that after the advent of the BBC TV and Door Doorshan, radio wasn’t ignored or sidelined by Britain or India. Even today when so many private TV channels are operating in England, the programme which is heard more than any other programme is the one entitled Today of BBC Radio 4 which has the maximum listeners throughout England.
The upshot of the above mentioned arguments is that a very effective medium of instruction and communication is not being put to its proper use by the powers that be since long which is unfortunate to say the least.
