The two principal ruling parties of the last half a decade still want to convince themselves and the people that the ‘heavens’ conspired against them and deprived them of all the opportunities to regain the confidence of their voters.
The two parties I am mentioning here are the Pakistan People’s Party and the Awami National Party.
Sensing their defeat in the polls they had started talking about a heinous conspiracy on the part of the forces of ‘religious extremism’ to make life miserable for the liberal and secular camp in the country. It is a strange coincidence that the parties that were projecting themselves as the voices of liberalism and secularism were backed by Washington from the day one. Who doesn’t know about the secret Washington trip of three top leaders of the ANP before the elections of February 2008? The party was extensively funded by Americans. And if the memories of the Memogate are alive in the minds of the people, it will not be difficult for them to understand the ‘nature of ‘Zardari-Washington’ relationship.
At no stage Americans seemed to abandon their support to their ‘liberal and secular’ clients in Pakistan. It has been the tidal wave of the anger of the masses of Pakistan against the monumental corruption of their former rulers that finally swept them away. In the bargain however the people of Pakistan have been able to get rid of the menace of liberalism and anti-Pakistan secular thought.
