It is not a well-guarded secret that most of the West and Israel will want Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to go. Till a few years back Turkey was regarded as a dependable ally of Israel in the Middle East. But Erdogan’s Pro-Arab and pro-Islam policies changed everything. Today Turkey stands poles apart from Israel. Even though the U.S efforts to bridge the gulf between the countries have recently shown some partial success, Israel no longer regards Erdogan’s Turkey as a dependable supporter in the Middle East conflict.
The recent Taksim Square demonstrations against Turkey’s government are therefore suspected to have been sparked off by Israel’s secret agents and sympathisers in the pro-Kemalist ranks of Erdogan’s opposition.
Initially the protests were focused on protecting Gezi Park from being razed for a mall. But now the organized anti-development and anti-Erdogan demonstrators want the prime minister to go. Their argument is that Erdogan being a conservative is anti-women. It is evident from his advocacy of atleast three children per family, and from his antiabortion stance.
Most liberal and secular forces in Turkey fear that Erdogan is gradually pushing Turkey back to its Islamic roots (in part by restricting alcohol and chastising a couple for kissing in public).
Outwardly the movement against Erdogan is built on environmental reasons, but the real reason is the growing fear of the secular forces of Turkey that if Erdogan isn’t stopped and confronted now, he may succeed in extending his rule by getting himself elevated to Presidency in the next elections, and in launching a full-scale Islamization campaign in Turkey.
