United Nations Sec retary-General Antonio Guterres will attend the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, his spokesman has confirmed. “The secretary-general received an invitation from the International Olympic Committee to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Games and he has accepted it,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Thursday. In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin also accepted the invitation to attend the Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony. The Beijing Winter Olympics are scheduled for February 4-20 and the Paralympic Winter Games, March 4-13. “In 2014, President Xi attended the opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics upon invitation. This time, President Xi has extended an invitation to his good friend President Putin to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a press briefing. “President Putin has gladly accepted the invitation.” The Chinese and the Russian sides are now in close communication on Putin’s trip, he added. “We believe the two heads of state’s get-together for the Winter Olympics will once again show that the two sides enjoy a partnership like neighbors and relatives wishing each other well,” said Zhao. – CGTN
