Just as fish cannot survive out of water, it is hard for Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s JUI and Altaf Hussain’s MQM to avoid ‘suffocation’ out of power. Both have rejoiced so long in the fruits of living in the close embrace of power, that after the elections of May 11, 2013 none of them is feeling at ease with the thought of having to ‘serve’ ‘the people’ and the ‘country’ from the opposition benches. Maulana in the very beginning made a bid for power in the KPK, but couldn’t persuade MNS to walk into his trap. Thereafter he has made himself available to the government of MNS at Islamabad, on terms that are deemed as mutually acceptable. It so happens that MNS doesn’t really need the support of Maulana to remain politically stable, and therefore doesn’t seem to be in too great a hurry to oblige the bearded soldier of fortune to his satisfaction.
Same is the case of Altaf Bhai and his MQM in Sind. Zardari Sahib and his party happen not to be depending on the MQM’s support for forming a stable government in Sind. And the MQM is finding it hard to pursue their original decision of sitting on the opposition benches. Therefore some formula is being worked out that on the one hand will not hurt the chauvinism of Sind’s Waderas, and on the other hand will not make it overly hard for the MQM leaders to swallow their pride.
