Quite clearly there is going on an organized media campaign against ‘the image’ of the ‘intelligence agencies’. This phrase has since long been in use to describe the collective impact of the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence), the MI (Military Intelligence) and the IB (Intelligence Bureau) on our political history. As for the last two named above, no one’s mind happens to go in their direction when any analyst makes a reference to the involvement of ‘the agencies’ in any development. Whenever the term ‘agencies’ is used in this context, the implied meaning is always the ISI.
In a book by a famous CIA-connected reporter/analyst that I read recently, an interesting remark didn’t fail to catch my attention.
“The best way to clobber the Pakistan Military is to attack its lifeline—the ISI”.
A large segment of our media seems to be doing exactly that. One does not need to know which forces happen to be behind this segment of media in its sustained ISI-bashing campaign. A couple of TV channels happen to be a lot more active and vocal than others in this respect. Just as a few analysts and anchorpersons are more candid and daring than the rest.
The platform that these ‘well-looked-after’ forces of anti-ISI propaganda are using is Democracy. Their inferences and conclusions frequently are the same. Unchanged.
“If Democracy is to be protected in this country and given a long run, the only way to do it is to clobber the image of the ISI, and the Uniform in as sustained a manner as possible.”
The only flaw in the thinking of these ‘propagandists’ is that the masses are far more interested in the protection of this country itself than its democracy. Precisely why, in the opinion of the patriots of this country, the propaganda of the ISI-bashers is going to backfire.
