. An event dedicated to the birthday of the world famous writer Chingiz Aitmatov is held today at the Kyrgyz National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Bishkek. The event was attended by presidential adviser, writer, historian Arslan Koichiev, Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy Saltanat Amanova, chairman of the National Union of Writers Nurlan Kalybekov, poets and cultural figures.
The event has began with a theatrical performance. The theater artists staged the play “Mankurt” based on Aitmatov’s novel “The day lasts longer than a century.” Presidential adviser Arslan Koichiev said that December 12 is a symbolic day for the Kyrgyz people. “Because this is the birthday of the great writer Chingiz Aitmatov. Because of respect for him, every year on this day we celebrate the Literature Day. Secondly, it is our desire to appreciate literature. Even if we have not made much economic progress in the past 30 years, we are still trying to make spiritual progress, including in the field of literature,” he said. Great writer Chingiz Aitmatov was born on Dec. 12, 1928 in Sheker village of Kyrgyzstan’s Talas Oblast. The great writer died on June 10, 2008 in a hospital in the German city of Nuremberg, where he was being treated. Chingiz Aitmatov was buried in the Ata-Beyit historical-memorial complex near Bishkek.
