Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked village-owned enterprises (BUM Desa) to encourage the development of community businesses in rural areas.
“For example, if there are 5–10 small shops in the village, BUM Desa should not build bigger shops so that it weakens other small shops. On the other hand, the enterprises must push the 10 small shops to 20, and from small shops to medium or large capacity shops,” the President said at the launch of Legal Entity Certificates and the National Coordination Meeting of BUM Desa, here on Monday. He asked BUM Desa to establish new businesses that are not yet present in the village, but are needed by the community. That way, the community can get the contribution from the enterprises, Widodo explained.
“BUM Desa must together take part in constructive economic activities, and not weaken the people’s economy,” he added.
“That way, people don’t have to go to cities, sub-districts, or districts to get the goods they need. They can get it in the village, and, of course, BUM Desa will benefit from this activity,” the President said.
“People don’t need to buy fertilizer separately. It can be obtained at BUM Desa. They can also cooperate with plantation companies,” he added.
President Widodo then promised to ask state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private companies operating in rural areas to involve BUM Desa in their business activities.
“People shouldn’t just watch a number of trucks carrying large plantations. Mining products are taken out of the village, while the villagers are not involved. I will firmly ask them to involve BUM Desa,” said the President.
