LAHORE, December 27: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that the ‘damage’ done by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government during the last three years would be dwarfed by the havoc the mini budget to be presented by the government would wreak.
“The mini budget is like stabbing the nation in its back,” he said, and vowed to oppose it till the very end. Shehbaz further said he again appealed to what he called members of the PTI government with a ‘conscience’ not to vote in the favour of the budget since it was a bitter pill to swallow.
PML-N president was of the view that in case the budget was passed; it would leave the country’s economy dependent on international money lending organisations. He did not stop at it, and went on to add that the budget would also prove to be detrimental for the country’s interests, including the nuclear and Kashmir issues.
He opined that rather than presenting the mini budget, it would be better if the government chalked out a durable and a long-term strategy to pull the country out of the economic crisis. “A 10-year long policy is required to rid the country of the economic issues it is confronted with right now,” he asserted.
“But truth of the matter is that neither this government has the ability nor the vision to formulate such a policy,” he claimed.
Shehbaz was of the view that the policy rate would have to be slashed so that business activities could be generated. “This will also lessen the burden of loan repayment and reduce inflation,” he stressed.
PML-N said that the government had held negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in haste. “Neither the government showed any seriousness nor did it look prepared to hold talks with the Fund officials,” he added.-DNA
