PESHAWAR, March 13: At least eight miners were killed and several others trapped when a coalmine collapsed in northwest Pakistan on Saturday. According to a private TV network the coalmine caved in due to heavy rain in lower Orakzai Agency in the country’s northwestern tribal belt.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan army, said in a statement that 27 people have been recovered alive. The ISPR said that 100 personnel of the Pakistan Army and the Frontier Corps (FC) were engaged in the rescue operation.
The statement said five to six more people are believed to be trapped under the debris. It said the rescue operation was being carried out using heavy machinery.
Those retrieved by rescue officials are said to have sustained minor injuries.
National Disaster Manage-ment Authority (NDMA) and other departments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province are also involved in the rescue work besides the Pakistan Army and paramilitary troops.-Agencies
