salmaSalma Hayek and Matthew McConaughey are in Dubai for a private gala dinner tonight, in support of the Global Teacher Prize. They join Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar, as well as Korean-American singer Eric Nam and Moroccan singer Hatim Ammor.
The Global Teacher Prize is an annual $1 million (Dh3.6 million) award that is given to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to his/her profession.Ten finalists will be attending the winner-announcement ceremony tonight at the Global Education and Skills Forum (GESF). This will be followed by an invite-only red-carpet and gala event at Atlantis the Palm, where celebrities will show their support. Actor Kevin Spacey and musician Esperanza Spalding are among the jury members this year. In 2015, Nancie Atwell won the inaugural prize; she donated the entire amount to Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), a school she founded in America for underprivileged learners.
The Global Teacher Prize is awarded by the Varkey Foundation, a not-for-profit that works to improve the lives of underprivileged children. – MD
