Chairman of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan Kamchybek Tashiev and his Tajik counterpart Saimumin Yatimov held a meeting. The meeting was held on Saturday in Kyrgyzstan’s Batken Oblast.
Following the discussion, the heads of the Kyrgyz and Tajik Committees for National Security answered journalists’ questions. Kamchybek Tashiev said that a decision was made to resume the work of intergovernmental commission on delimitation and demarcation of border, as the work of the commission was suspended 2 months ago. “We decided that the work will be carried out intensively on a permanent basis within the framework of protocols and interests of our states. Despite the fact that we have not signed any documents, our words will be fulfilled,” the head of the Kyrgyz Committee for National Security said.
On Jan. 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tajik border guards unilaterally blocked a section of the Batken-Isfana road in the area of ??Tort-Kocho in Batken region of Kyrgyzstan. As a result of negotiations, at 7:30 p.m. the road section was reopened for traffic. However, around 7:35 p.m., the situation worsened due to the use of weapons and fire by the Tajik side on the border units of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan in the Chyr-Dobo area of ?? Batken region. The Tajik side used mortars and grenade launchers. Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have agreed on a complete ceasefire on the border. President Sadyr Zhaparov appealed to Kyrgyzstanis with the assurance that the situation at the border would be resolved peacefully. As of Jan. 29, the situation at the Kyrgyz-Tajik section of the state border is characterized as stable.
The Kyrgyz side has already completed the withdrawal of additional forces and assets from the border line to their permanent deployment points. The border units are serving in the regular mode. The Health Ministry of the republic reported about 13 people injured as a result of the border conflict. All of them are receiving appropriate treatment.
