Pakistan’s Constitution is based on The Charter Of Objectives which in no unambiguous terms declares that the ultimate sovereignty in the country lies and will always lie with the Almighty Allah, and no law here will be made and enforced that is not in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
Can any parliament, or group of political opportunists, favour-seekers and mercenaries-on-hire make amendments in the constitution to the following effect?
i) For three weeks, months or years, Allah’s ultimate sover eignty is either fully abolished, or partially transferred to Mr so-and-so
ii) For four weeks, months or years, the laws of the country will be independent of the teachings of Islam, and the orders issued by Mr so-and-so will overrule the Commandments of Allah for all practical purposes.
The above question can not be dismissed lightly (as an exercise in hypothetical presumption). Certainly not in a Pakistan where the Constitution of the country has been tailored and being re-tailored to suit the whims and requirements of an individual who has been granted virtually Divine dimensions by being made the specific and stated reason behind so many amendments in so many articles of The Constitution.
Quite clearly this Constitution is Musharraf-specific. He has been granted a special status, because of which he can contest the presidential elections in uniform, and can get himself re-elected by the assemblies which are soon to be buried in the grave-yard of history.
For those who are fervently defending the lawfulness and legitimacy of General Pervez Musharraf being exempt from the normal laws of the Constitution (because the Parliament has granted him exemption) I have a question to ponder upon:
If the parliament votes in favour of a rule that for one month Pakistan will bow before two Allahs instead of one, will the people and the Courts of Pakistan be honour-bound to observe and respect this rule?
