It is wrong to presume that the Republicans in the US are more favourably inclined to Pakistan than the Democrats. Wasn’t it the Republican president Nixon who had promised Pakistan that the US fleet was on its way to the sub- continent in the 1971 Indo-Pak war to checkmate the activities of the Russo-India military alliance which was engaged in dismembering Pakistan? That US armada never arrived. Pakistan, on the contrary, has always danced to the tune of the Republican presidents, whether he was Eishenhower, Reagan or Bush. In their bid to appease them, our leadership unneccesarily earned many enemies for Pakistan in the process who still suspect us to be a satellite state of US.
It is immaterial for us who wins the 2016 presidential election in the US. Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump! They will be guided by their own personal interests rather than that of Pakistan. From whatever one can gather from media reports, Trump appears to be a racist having no soft corner in his heart for the races who are not white skinned. Surely, it would be misfortune not only for the Americans but to most of the third world countries if he comes to power in the US. Hillary, on the contrary, might be lesser evil for them. She is comparatively a balanced personality and fairly experienced also having seen her husband function from a close angle as the president of the US for good eight years and also having worked in the US state department for a fairly long time. That experience would come her handy in tackling international affairs.
Since Obama’s days are now numbered he is not going to take major decisions during the next seven months or so left for the fresh presidential elections due in coming November. The sitting American presidents normally become lame duck presidents as the new presidential elections approach and they avoid taking those decisions which have the potentialities of affecting future events.
