That Imran Khan’s demonstration of his popular support and following has been a thumping success is being disputed only by the likes of Rana Sanaullah and Khwaja Saad Rafiq. Because of the Geo episode, the rest of the country’s media has been generously unbiased in reporting and commenting on the PTI rally at the D-Chowk in Islamabad. For the first time Imran Khan had good reasons to express his ‘hearty thanks’ to the media for the enthusiasm with which most major channels covered the event. I have equally good reasons to believe that this demonstration of enthusiasm on the part of the TV channels was less pro-Imran Khan and more anti-Geo. There is always a price to be paid for the arrogance that comes with one-upmanship. Geo quite clearly is paying it. The only comfort it can presently feel is the clandestine as well as visible backing it continues to receive and enjoy form the Government of Mian Nawaz Sharif.
Now that the 11th May has passed into history, and IK has set May 23, 2014 as his next date to demonstrate both, his disenchantment with the electoral system that had allegedly stolen the mandate from him on May 11, 2013, and his enchantment with the idea of forcing the ruling party to succumb to the pressure of the masses.
Those who have been following the chain of events in Pakistan’s history however know that for any dream of a political change in the country to come true, the pressure that ultimately counts is the one that is exerted from the power of the uniform.
If an opinion poll of popularity were to be conducted fairly and honestly today, it will neither be the PPP, nor the PTI, nor the PML (N) that will be at the top.
Then Who?
