There is no gainsaying the fact that when the first prime minister of Pakistan wanted to visit Moscow on the invitation of the then Soviet government,the White House prevailed upon him to cancel that visit and instead visit Washington which he did and from that point onwards our rulers have been playing into the hands of the White House,much to the chagrin ofRussia.One of our leaders in blind allegiance to the US even gave permission to the US to use an air base near Peshawar from where an American spy plane use to fly over Russia to photograph Russian military installations till it was shot down by the Russians and he spilled the beans From that day onwards the relations between Pakistan and Russia started deteriorating.They further deteriorated when Pakistan at the instance of the Americans supported militarily the Afghan Mujahideen against the Russian occupation forces in Afghanistan.Small wonder Moscow supported India in the 1971 Indo Pak war.
Let us admit it was a diplomatic blunder on the part of us to incur the wrath of our mighty neighbour Soviet Union for the sake of countries lying seven seas away from this country.
A great wrong was righted when the present government started to mend fences with Moscow and cement further close ties with Beijing.This century belongs to China insofar economic, scientific and military prowess is concerned and Pakistan will stand to gain if it kept itself on the right side of Russia and china which have now hit it off and the communist bloc has become a force to be reckoned with.
