On the margins of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva during the 12th Ministerial Conference, Minister of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan Daniyar Amangeldiev met with Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar.
The Economy Ministry of Kyrgyzstan reported that topical issues in multilateral and bilateral cooperation were discussed during the meeting.
Both sides noted the low level of trade and economic relations between the countries, despite the existing potential and political will.
Syed Naveed Qamar noted the possibility of the use of the transit ports of Pakistan by Kyrgyzstan to enter the world markets. In this regard, he proposed to sign a bilateral transit agreement with the republic for the exit of goods through the ports of Pakistan and the exit of Pakistani through the territory of Kyrgyzstan to the countries of the Eurasian continent.
Amangeldiev informed about the ongoing work in the implementation of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway network project. “We are interested in considering an agreement to use mutual transit potentials,” the minister said.
The sides agreed to begin work to establish a working group to develop trade and economic cooperation, in which the issues raised during the meeting will be discussed in detail.
During the meeting, the CASA-1000 project was mentioned, which envisages the supply of electricity by Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan through Afghanistan.
Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan are beneficiaries of GSP+ status with regard to exports of goods to the European Union, the visible results of which are still lacking. The parties agreed to jointly promote interests in negotiations with the EU on GSP+, the possible development of a joint strategy in the implementation of this status and increase the supply of products to the EU market.
The ministers also invited each other to visit their countries for an official visit and agreed to do so in the near future in order to implement all the issues raised.
