Turkmenistan proposed Iran to increase swap supplies of its natural gas to Azerbaijan and establish swap gas deliveries to other countries. The Iranian Petroleum Minister Javad Owji made the remarks in talks to reporters on Tuesday following the meeting with the Turkmen delegation in Tehran, the Iranian Petroleum Ministry’s news agency Shana reports.
The meeting took place ahead of the official visit of Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Iran.
Javad Owji said the 13th administration has made good achievements in the field of energy diplomacy over the last 10 months. In the first months of this Iranian administration, a gas swap agreement was signed between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran, Owji said, adding that currently 1.5 to 2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas is being delivered to Azerbaijan through Iran annually.
He stated that during his recent visit to Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani side asked Iran to double the swap gas supplies from Turkmenistan, which was welcomed by Iranian side. The Turkmen side in a meeting in Tehran also proposed Iran to increase gas swaps to Azerbaijan and establish gas swaps to other neighboring countries, Owji continued, adding that the Iranian side announced its readiness for the increase.
The meeting also discussed the revival of Turkmen gas export contract to Iran and the payment of Iran’s gas debt to Turkmenistan.
