Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia will become the host for a ministerial-level summit to discuss issues pertaining to people with disabilities in the Asia-Pacific region, Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismahrini stated. The minister told the media crew here on Tuesday that the activity is planned to be held in October 2022. This is a step forward on account of the fact that the Ministry of Social Affairs highly supports independence programs of people with disabilities, such as the Indonesia Hear Program for people with hearing disability, she opined. In addition, the ministry has produced several other innovations, such as providing three-wheeled vehicle support equipment for people with disabilities in order to support economic independence. The ministry also provided adaptive sticks for visually impaired people. “Within several of our centers, we also utilize or employ disabled workforce. In fact, they are the ones who create equipment for people with disabilities,” she revealed. Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana noted that the meeting will discuss several priorities comprising accessibility, work opportunities for people with disabilities, social security protection, and social rehabilitation program.
It is expected that Indonesia, in addition to being a host, will serve as an example for other countries in terms of creating innovations and programs for people with disabilities. Earlier, Presidential Special Staff Angkie Yudistia along with other officials had striven to ensure that people with disabilities obtained the citizenship document. In Surabaya, East Java, on Thursday, they unveiled the Citizenship Document for Disabled Completion Collective Movement to realize an inclusive society. This movement is the realization of the Indonesian government’s commitment to respect, protect, and fulfill the rights of people with disabilities, she remarked through a press statement.
