ISLAMABAD, June 27: A four-day international training workshop on “language documentation” started yesterday (June 27) at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU). Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mariyam Aurangzeb was the chief guest at the inaugural session.
Addressing the session, she said that language is the greatest expression of any civilization, and the mother tongue is an essential element for the social development of human beings in the present times. She said that Vice Chancellor, AIOU, Prof. Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum deserves congratulations for conducting an international training workshop on this important topic which can become a national mission. Maryam Aurangzeb said that this initiative of Open University can be expanded. There are more than 450 schools and colleges in Islamabad, and we can introduce this program there with the collaboration of AIOU. Maryam Aurangzeb said that the government will provide the necessary support to Allama Iqbal Open University for the establishment of a “Linguistic Management System”. A condolence prayer for VC, AIOU, Prof. Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum’s father was also offered at the start of the session.
Dean Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood said that the university is working hard for the betterment of society. He said that the Vice Chancellor of the University has also set up a Center for Social Reconstruction and an Excellence Center for this purpose. Director Workshop, University of North Texas, USA, Dr. SadafMunshi said that she has been researching on preserving indigenous languages in Pakistan since 2010. Director, Centre for Language and Translation studies, Dr. Ghulam Ali, and Dr. Lubna Omar explained the aims and objectives of the training workshop. They said that more than 50 scholars from 30 Pakistani universities are undergoing training in this workshop. It is pertinent to mention here that this workshop has been organized by the Center for Language and Translation Studies, AIOU in collaboration with the University of North Texas, USA, and Englishers LLL International, Turkey.-PR
