Despite the current situation in the world and the strict measures introduced in the port of Turkmenbashi, the growth of cargo transportation in Turkmenistan last year compared to 2019 increased by 28%.
This data was shared by Ambassador Atageldi Haljanov, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, during his speech at the international conference “International Transport and Transit Corridors: Connectivity and Development” on Monday in Ashgabat.
He added that the transportation of containers tripled, while the transportation by vehicles increased by 15%.
The Turkmen Ambassador stated the importance of two international transport projects in the region which are being implemented by Turkmenistan together with partners – Agreement on the Establishment of an International Transport and Transit Corridor between Iran-Oman-Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan Governments, known as the Ashgabat Agreement, and the Lapis Lazuli corridor.
When carrying out work under the Ashgabat Agreement, as well as in the routes of Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe and North-South, Turkmenistan considers it necessary to increase the capacity of improved transport routes, Haljanow added.
Ambassador Haljanov informed of the ongoing discussions on options for the route of the transport corridor under the Ashgabat agreement, coordination of actions at checkpoints, as well as opportunities to simplify customs procedures.

The two-day conference is organized on the initiative of the Agency for Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan. The main organizers of the conference are Türkmendemirýollary” (Turkmen Railways), Turkmenawtoulaglary (Turkmen Road Transport), Türkmendenizderýaýollary (Turkmen Maritime and River Transport) and Türkmenho waýollary (Turkm enistan Airlines) agencies, and the company Transport and Logistics Centre of Turkmenistan (TULM). The co-organizers of the conference are the Turkmen Forum and Turkmen Logistics Association.
