ISLAMABAD, July 21: According to the U.S. State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons Report published this month, the Government of Pakistan is making significant efforts in improving the situation of trafficking in persons and now placed in tier 2.
Earlier, State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons has placed Pakistan in “Tier 2 Watch list” in 2020.
Pakistan faces the challenges of human trafficking as source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children subjected to trafficking in persons (TIP), specifically forced labour and prostitution. This has also been indicated in the US TIP Reports over the last several years have been consistently that internal trafficking, mainly forced labor, is a real challenge for Pakistan and due to this very reason the U.S. State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons has placed Pakistan in “Tier 2 Watch list” in 2020 and also highlighted that if measures are not taken and recommendation provided are not acted upon then the country might come down to “Tier 3”.
However, the Government of Pakistan took the matter seriously and undertook significant efforts which made them progress towards “Tier 2” as per the U.S. State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons Report published on 19th July 2022. The report reflects upon how the government has demonstrated overall increasing efforts compared with the previous reporting period, considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its anti-trafficking .-DNA
