Persons like Abdul Sattar Edhi are born once in a blue moon. They are a rare commodity. It is difficult to find proper words for praising this frail old man, now in the autumn of his life, down with failing kidneys, gasping for breath and counting his final days. God has blessed this sub-continent with two such persons who dedicated their entire life in public service without expecting any reward, whatever, from any one in return. They provide a beacon light to the youth of the sub-continent how to live out their lives. To live for the sake of oneself and for one’s own family is no life. To live for others is the true life. One was Mother Teresa and the other, Abdul Sattar Edhi. Mother Teresa has died but she lives in the heart of all and sundry in this part of the world which is called the Indo-Pak sub-continent.
Persons like them carve out for themselves a permanent niche in the World Hall of Fame. They don’t die. They always live in the heart of the teeming millions , the down trodden and the have-nots. Edhi was offered medical treatment abroad in the best possible hospitals gratis but he declined those offers saying that he has a full trust in the doctors of his own country who are second to none when it comes to expertise in medicine and surgery ——a far cry from the thinking and approach of the elite of this country who rush to UK and US at the drop of a hat even if they had minor infection in their body.
POSTSCRIPT: If all goes well Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif would land in Lahore on the 10th of next month. The PML(N) intends to give him a rousing reception and take him to his house in Raiwind in a big public rally from the airport. The earlier he returns to his country the better because this country has been running now for more than a month without a prime minister and we are lucky that nothing serious has happened during this period. The rulers of this country have been taking the affairs of this country quite lightly as is evident from the fact that the president didn’t mind leaving the country also during this period for a couple of days without realising how necessary it was for him to stay back in the country given the fact that the ailing premier was outside the country.
