Why should members of our elite be going for a medical check up at the drop of a hat to London or Chicago? Most of the medicos working abroad belong to this country. Even in this very country there is no dearth of good physicians and surgeons, besides, availability of latest surgical instruments and other equipment for diagnosis of any ailment. The decision of the prime minister to fly to London all of a sudden for medical check up has raised many eyebrows. It has raised more questions than answers as till the time Panama leaks had popped into the headlines no indication was ever given by the spokesman of the PM House that he was ill or that his visit to UK was on the cards for medical check up. If he has gone to England to freshen up as undoubtedly he must be under tremendous pressure after the Panama leaks involving him and his family in financial scam and raising many questions on his financial integrity it is quite understandable but even in London, thousand of miles away from Pakistan these leaks are going to haunt him till he gets a clean bill of health from experts’ commission in the matter.
The better course for him was that he should have resigned just as many other world leaders had, though charges against them have yet to be proved, and cleared his name from the competent forum if he considers himself to be innocent. He had better follow their precedent. It would increase his political stature in the eyes of the common man and dispel the common perception that he wants to remain in the saddle, come hell or high water. The PML[N] could have elected any person in his place for the slot of prime minister of the country for the remaining term till the next elections so as to ensure continuity in parliamentary democracy. If the PM refuses to call it quits the rest of his stint in office will not be beer and skittles:it is going to be marred with protest rallies and sit-ins galore till 2018 and the possibility that many mega developmental projects now under execution might be adversely affected thus to the detriment of country’s economy. Personal ego of the ruling party should not come into the way of national priorities.
