It seems Zardari doesn’t want to part with the power inside his party and that is the precise reason why Bilawal has to travel frequently from Karachi to Dubai and London to seek his advice from his father even on tiny political matters. The next general elections are due soon but the PPP continues to suffer from internal dissensions. God knows why the PPP’s leadership is reluctant to hold intra-party elections. May be it is afraid that dyed-in-the-wool leftists commonly known as ‘ideological workers’ might win important positions inside the hie-archy of the party in case intra-party elections are held. The question is:why should the PPP leadership be afraid if that happens? If they are going to make it to the top in the districts and province, so be it?Their elevation to significant party positions would improve the standing of the party among the common people of the country.
The PPP leadership shouldn’t forget that if it wants that the PPP should find its feet at once it will have to get rid of the old johnnies. The rank-and-file within this party do not want the old faces moving in the corridors of power as, individually, and collectively they are responsible for the downfall of the party during the past few years. The earlier the PPP leadership realised it the better.
The PPP will be pitted against the PTI in the 2018 general elections whose leader Imran Khan is riding the wave of popularity. The PTI remains untested in power at the centre and this factor would weigh heavily with the electorate and go in favour of it at the hustings. If the PPP landed in the political arena with the same old faces who are responsible for its ruination it will be committing its political hara- kiri . Odds are that the 2018 elections would be won by the PTI in any case if all goes well. The PPP minus Zardari can, however, bet its chances on the 2023 general elections.
POSTSCRIPT. Shahryar might be a good diplomat but as an administrator his performance leaves much to be desired. His policies as PCB chairman smack of ad-hocism which he must discard.
