If the grenade attack on a private TV station in Islamabad on last Wednesday wasn’t the handiwork of Daesh, whose work was it? The interior ministry has all along been denying the presence of this new terrorist outfit in the federal capital? The pamphlet that the attackers left behind made it abundantly clear that prima facie Daesh was behind this attack. The same day it stormed our consulate building in Jalalabad also, not quite far away from our borders. There is no dearth of religious militant groups in this country which are spreading terrorism in the name of religion and thus bringing a bad name to it. There is no denying the fact that, either due to cowardice, or political expediency an influential section within the Panjab government has been shy of coming down with a heavy hand on the lunatic fringe among the religious parties which is unfortunate to say the least as it is going to destabilise the country beyond repair. The statement of the federal minister Abdul Qadir Baloch that the back of the terrorists has been broken in Panjab cannot be taken without a pinch of salt. The southern Panjab continues to be the den of sectarian element and it is in the evidence that the (N) League has been meting out a kid-glove treatment to it since long. Even in the federal capital, right under the nose of interior ministry a cleric has been making firebrand sectarian speeches and the authorities are looking the other way.
The arrest of leading persons of the banned Jaish e Mohammad by our authorities following allegations from across the border that they had masterminded the recent Pathankot’s episode shows that both the civilian and military leadership of the country are on the same page. If they are proved to be involved in this incident they must get their just deserts. Hitherto the common misconception spread by Indian media and political leadership was that every act of terrorism that took place in India was bankrolled by our Establishment. The very fact that in the instant case the arrest of the Jaish e Mohammad’s elders had the full backing of the Armed forces of Pakistan should dispel this misconception.
