The prime minister is scheduled to undergo open heart surgery on the last day of this month if all goes well. It is a major surgical operation and the entire nation prays for its success and early recovery of the PM.
Heart ailment is a progressive disease. It cannot be cured altogether though medical science has advanced to the extent that it can be contained through medication and proper life management. The PM surely knows that you live only once. Life is a very precious thing and looking after one’s health should always take precedence over other things. The responsibilities which lie on the shoulders of the PM are too burdensome for frail Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif to bear them any long.
It would be , therefore, in his own interest as well as in the interest of the country that as soon as he returns to Pakistan after his surgery he should call it a day and take complete rest for a year or two before rejoining politics. He can nominate his successor for carrying on as PM till 2018 when fresh elections would be due. He should take care not to nominate any one from his family members as his successor for dispelling the common perception that he is trying to establish dynastic politics in the country.
The country needs continuity in government because not only is it confronted with umpteen problems of the first magnitude, it is masterminding a number of mega projects aimed at seeing the back of loadshedding as well as fighting off terrorism. . The present government must complete its term in office and its ministerial set up must ensure rule of law in the country otherwise it might suffer the same fate in the forthcoming polls which the PPP suffered in 2013 elections. Mark my words.
