Somebody wrote in the social media the other day that a poor christian labourer working in a brick kiln, apparently upset by price hike in consumer goods, consoled his wife by saying that she should not worry because as soon as the sacred month of Ramadhan will end there would be a fall in the price of essential commodities and they would be available at a cheaper rates. Truer words were never spoken. These words said it all.
In most of the Christian world the traders on their own volition reduce the price of essential goods on the eve of religious occasions like Christmas and easter so as to enable the poor also to participate fully in the religious ceremonies marked for these occasions ;on the contrary our traders jack up the price of those consumer goods and edibles whose demand multiply during the holy month of Ramadhan for scooping fat gains within this one month.
The so-called district price review committees set up for monitoring price index of essential commodities remain dormant throughout the year and suddenly become active at the advent of Ramadhan. What good are these committees if they cannot keep a vigil on the commercial market and refrain the greedy and unscrupulous traders from increasing the price of consumer goods without any cogent reason and discourage them to hoard the essential goods for creating their artificial scarcity in the market .
POSTSCRIPT: With the passing away of Mohammad Ali the sports’world has lost a legend. From early 1960 hitherto he hit the headlines wherever he went round the world and was a role model for the sportsmen of the third world,in particular. The sports’world would certainly be poorer without him.
