Mindset of capitalists remains the same everywhere and in all points in time. We had read long ago the notorious remark of the French queen that had touched the bloody French Revolution, the like of which was seldom seen by the world. A mob had assembled in front of her palace protesting against the non-availability of bread. She asked her prime minister as to what was their problem? She was informed they were complaining that bread wasn’t available on which she said if bread was not available they should eat cake. Our finance minister Ishaque Dar had, the other day, committed a faux pas when in one of his recent speech he said the poor had better start eating chickens if they cannot afford purchasing pulses which are the staple diet of the down trodden because they were much cheaper and, therefore, within the reach of the common man. No longer is the case now. Since the price of pulses have overshot that of chicken it prompted the Finance minister to make this remark which he should not have made as it amounted to rubbing salt into the wounds of the poor of this country who is finding it difficult to make his both ends meet. He is even not sure where his next meal would come from.
What good is a government if it cannot document national economy, if it cannot bring the filthy rich under the tax net, if it cannot resort to direct taxation and if it provides the elite with an opportunity to whiten its black money through amnesty schemes ?
POSTSCRIPT: Though on paper local bodies stand constituted but they are still toothless. They haven’t been invested with the powers that are needed to make them truly functional. The government should have discontinued giving crores of rupees to every MNA, MPA and senator every year for carrying out so- called developmental activity in their constituency the moment local bodies were formed and instead given this money to elected local bodies. It seems that parliamentarians in their heart of hearts don’t want to part with this money and the government is helpless before them.
