Most of us are mere wheel drivers. No body has taught us about traffic rules. Driving licences are easily obtainable in this country provided one has connections at the right places or enough money in one’s wallet to grease the palms of those whose job it is to issue driving licence. Small wonder more people are killed in road accidents in this country than any fatal disease.
Most of us exhibit arrogance while sitting at the wheels. We consider it as an affront if some policemen flags us on the road for checking our car documents or for advising us not to overspeed so instead of stopping we accelerate our cars. If the traffic police officer after chasing us make us stop the car we try to cow him down by shouting at him and, more often than not, use fisticuffs too.
A couple of days ago a similar incident occurred on the motorway near Nowshera when some responsible officers belonging to a state institution were found driving two cars at a tremendous speed. When the Motorway policemen waved them to stop they, instead of complying with their order, further accelerated the speed on which they were chased by those motorway policemen They were stopped by the motorway policemen of the next checkpost in the way who had been informed well in time through wireless by the motorway policemen chasing them. Instead of listening to the motorway policemen, the alleged accused scuffled with them and took them forcibly into their illegal custody at Attock fort where they were allegedly beaten up. The issue was resolved after senior police and army officers intervened in the matter.
This is too serious a matter to be brushed aside lightly. Those found guilty need to be made an example of by meting out tough punishment to them.
