The results of the third phase of Local Bodies elections held on last saturday showed more or less the same trend which was seen in the earlier two phases of these elections. The PTI would have to now re-think its election strategy in future in the light of these results if it has to improve chances of its victory in the polls. It can fill in the political vacuum created by the eclipse of the power of the PPP and also nibble at the PML(N) vote bank provided its leadership apply its mind correctly while nominating its candidates in the polls. A sizeable number of voters have been casting their votes in favour of the independent candidates which indicates that there are many people in the country who are still undecided to vote for whom? It means they no longer trust any of the present political party and this mental state of indecision is forcing them to vote for the independents. This reflects badly on all the political parties in the arena as none of them has been able to gain confidence of the common man for one reason or the other.
It is a pity that many criminals or financially corrupt people in high places get away lightly with their crime mostly because of the wrong handling of their cases by the Prosecution. They don’t get their just deserts. The registration of murder case of Dr Imran Farooq the other day against Altaf Hussain and his alleged accomplices raises more questions than answers. Would it be legally justifiable to try the accused at a place where the crime was not physically committed? Are the Pakistani and London police who both carried out preliminary investigation into this murder on the same page? What precluded the London police from trying the alleged accused in a London court and why it didn’t demand those accused from Pakistan who committed this murder in London and later fled away to Pakistan? There are wheels within wheels. Experience of hindsight says the more complicated a criminal case, the more beneficial it is for the alleged accused who, more often than not, in that case, get the benefit of the doubt and escape punishment because of it.
