Ishrat-ul-Ibad must take comfort from the age old adage that all good things have to come to an end one day. After remaining as governor Sindh for good 14 years he was finally replaced a couple of days ago by the president but not before he had set up a record as the longest serving governor of Sindh.
There is no gainsaying the fact that the main reason for his survival as Governor Sindh was the unqualified support of Altaf Hussain which he enjoyed for a long long time but it should also be not forgotten that he had also proved himself to be an excellent PR man as he had had the knack of keeping in good humour all those who mattered in the corridors of power. To keep the diverse political forces of Sindh on one ‘s right side for as long as 14 years is a tight rope walking and is certainly no mean achievement and it certainly goes to the credit of Ishrat-ul-Ibad that during his long stay as governor Sindh he earned the respect of all political element in the province.
Towards the fag end of his stint as governor he had fallen out with some of his erstwhile colleagues in the MQM who hurled abuses at him thus leaving a very bad taste in the mouth of his well wishers.
When his mentor Altaf Hussain withdrew his political support from him about a year ago many had thought that probably that was the end of the matter and his days as governor were numbered but strangely enough he survived and continued to serve Sindh in the gubernatorial position. Small wonder the gentlemen of the fourth estate had very rightly billed him as the great survivor.
