Just about four months before the elections of May 2013 which led to the formation of Mian Nawaz Sharif’s government, he had announced categorically that when he would come to power he would transform the fortunes of the PIA through sheer good planning, competent management and hard work. He had also stated that to sell off the National Carrier was a preposterous idea.
Into third year in power, the present government’s good planning, managerial skills and hard work have led the PIA to a point that Mian Sahib finds no justification in keeping this white elephant in the hands of the people of Pakistan, and is so determined to sell it off at the very earliest that is not shy of shedding blood in this ‘sacred’ cause.
Most of the analysts believe that as was the intention of Mr. Asif Ali Zardari (when in power) Mian Sahib wants himself to be the seller, and himself to be the buyer.
Mian Sahib is indeed a shrewd businessman, but as the Chief Executive of this country he has to answer a key question honestly.
“Can any government be trusted with the task of running a country as big as Pakistan, which cannot run its National Carrier?”
