KARACHI, March 20: Renowned nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Monday said that Pakistan is free from all sorts of security threats due to its nuclear weapons.
Addressing at the prize distribution ceremony of the poster competition organized by Dr. A.Q Khan Institute (KIBGE) Karachi Universit, he said, “Pakistan is blessed with natural resources.” “If we ensure good governance in the country, in ten years we could successfully become a developed country like Turkey and Malaysia,” Dr. Khan added.
He said, “When India conducted nuclear tests in 1974, I wrote a letter to then Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto from Holland and offered my services for Pakistani nuclear program.”
“PM Bhutto called me immediately, during meeting I ensured him that we can make better nuclear weapons than India,” he said adding that I had no political background that’s why PM Bhutto gave me the responsibility of the nuclear program and we acquired nuclear capability in a span of mere six years which was a great milestone.
Maliha Iqbal Soomro secured first, Syeda Areesha Zaidi second while Aimen Pirzada secured third position in the poster competition.
Vice Chancellor KU Professor Dr. Muhammad Ajmal Khan said, “We are grateful to Dr. A. Q. Khan for his contribution in the field of science in the country also for developing this institute. He will now be glad to see the quality of research here.”
“Training is the most important part especially for the young researchers. KIBGE is playing pivotal role in the promotion of research culture,” he said.
“In this age of globalization and technological advancement, one could not undermine the importance of research in the field of science. Research culture must be promoted in the varsities in order to ensure development. Education system must be in accordance with the contemporary science and technological needs,” he said.
“When I was the student of KU, it was the number one ranked university of the country, uplifting university ranking is my ultimate goal as the vice chancellor of the varsity,” Dr. Khan added.
Director Dr. A.Q Khan Institute (KIBGE) Karachi University Professor Dr. Abid Azhar said, “Training in the field of science is vital. Training opportunities must be provided to the young scientists and KIBGE is doing so since a long time.” – DNA
