The holy month of Ramadhan is still one month away but the hoarders and blackmarketers in Islamabad have already jacked up the price of those edibles whose demand increase manifold during this month.
It is a pity that the district administration wakes up from its deep slumber only on the eve of Ramadhan or when the eid nears to control the price hike in essential commodities while it looks the other for the rest of the year.
Granted that the market mechanism gyrates round the principle of demand and supply and unwarranted administrative interference in this mechanism often proves counter productive but the traders and shopkeepers can also be not given unfettered freedom to fix the price of the consumer goods according to their whims and caprices.
The district administration should always keep a vigilant eye on the market and ensure that without any cogent reason and justification there should be no increase in the prices of edibles and other items of common use.
Our traders should hang their heads in shame over the fact that in many European countries their counterparts voluntarily cut back on the price of essential commodities on religious occasions like Christmas or easter so that the poor among them may not be hard put to observe their religious festivities.
