Nuclear Supplier Group is the group of nuclear supplier states that prevent the proliferation of nuclear by controlling the export materials, technology and equipments that can be used in making nuclear bomb. The NSG was founded in 1974 in response of Indian nuclear weapons. India violated the peaceful use of nuclear material with Canadian supplied research spent fuel for making plutonium. The formation of NSG was the result of Indian violation of peaceful use of nuclear.
In 2010 Obama announced its support for India in the NSG participation. The French president, United Kingdom and Russian president Vladimir Putin also supported India while China opposed India. India is not fulfilling its commitments with US because it is not working on Fissile Material Cut off treaty (FMCT). According to the recent reports it is also increasing its fissile material production facility. Poland also assured new Delhi to its support to get the membership of NSG and permanent seat in United Nation Security Council on 27 April 2017.While Indian membership in NSG will be lead to arm race in the region.
Pakistan also wants to get membership of NSG because India is getting it. It is also capable for civil nuclear trade. It also welcomed Barak Obama nuclear security initiative in 2009 by taking many steps to making more secure its nuclear weapons. It also ratified the convention of physical protection of nuclear material amendment in 2016. The amendment was about the physical protection of nuclear material during the international transport and storage. It bounds all member states to protect nuclear material from illegal trafficking, sabotage and nuclear terrorism. It also reduces the threats of nuclear accidents and nuclear terrorism. Pakistan is making best efforts to ensure it nuclear security by establishing centre of excellence and training and education centers. Pakistan ambassador at Vienna said that it supports international efforts to prevent proliferation of weapons of mass destruction means and their delivery means. If the membership of NSG would be given to India and not Pakistan then it would be discriminatory act of the major’s powers. Pakistan should continue good economic relations and nuclear cooperation with China because it is opposing India and favoring Pakistan. “It has the expertise, manpower, infrastructure and the ability to supply NSG controlled items, goods and services for a full range of nuclear applications for peaceful uses,” said Tasnim Aslam, head of the UN desk at the Foreign Office. The Chinese delegation also said in Vienna that NSG membership should be given on non discriminatory basis. The NSG member states want to give member ship to India to strengthen the values of NSG then it is necessary they also consider Pakistan membership in the NSG. India has not signed the non proliferation treaty which is requirement to becoming the member of NSG then how it can become the member of NSG? Why major powers supporting India? The support of major powers to India for the membership of NSG would undermine the non proliferation regimes. Major power should treat Pakistan as a nuclear weapon state like India. Their non discriminatory attitude towards Pakistan and extra ordinary favor of India would move the NSG and non proliferation regimes in the wrong direction. It would also damage credibility of NSG. If they want to give the membership of NSG to India then they should not forget Pakistan.
