The leader of the opposition in National Assembly has a point there when he says that the prime minister ought to take Parliament into confidence about the nature of his meeting with the Saudi king in Riyadh recently and the role of Pakistan in the 35- countries military pact headed by Saudi Arabia.
It is a pity that our rulers don’t take the trouble of informing or taking approval of Parliament while making important decisions which have a direct bearing on the law and order and integrity of the country.
The PM is holding the office of the country’s foreign minister also and as such it is his double responsibility to brief Parliament in the matter. Was he requested by any party in the middle east to mediate between the Saudis and their allies on one hand and Qatar on the other? If not, then why did he go to Riyadh? There are reports that the defence minister of Saudi Arabia has recently passed some derogatory remarks about Pakistan. It is alleged that he looks down upon the muslims living in the Sub- continent as lesser muslims. A news to this effect has gone viral on the social media also. The government should ask the Saudis to clarify. Was the statement attributed to him correct? If so, should he be not asked to tender apology to over 20 crore Muslims living in this country whose sentiments were injured by his statement?
Had the PM been attending national assembly sessions regularly for answering questions of the opposition personally like the British prime minister does, there would have been no confusion in the minds of our parliamentarians and general public on any issue.
