Political leaders like Nelson Mandela are born once in a blue who are capable of weathering any storm, including long jail terms. The Sharif brothers, particularly, Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, has a very poor track record on this score. He is like a fish outside water whenever he his in the clinker. He might be ill now but when Musharaf had shown him the door in 1999 , 20 years ago he was then quite hale and hearty but still he couldn’t withstand the rigours of jail and managed his release on the promise that he would leave the country and his people for ten years . The rest is now history. He spent a couple of years in the comfy Saroor palace in Saudi Arabia till political situation favoured his return to Islamabad.
At the moment he is a visibly shaken man. Ousted from power by a court verdict in a corruption case he lost his wife also who died in England while he was engaged in his trial in Pakistan. His health is, by no account stable. The government might have to allow him for medical treatment abroad in case the local medics thought that he can be treated better in England or the US. In that case, tongues would definitely wag that the authorities had granted him an NRO to let him off the hook. His detractors have already started circulating stories in the media that behind-the-scenes confabulations are on between him and the powers that be and sooner than later he might fly into London.
In case Mian Nawaz Sharif leaves the country after entering into some kind of understanding with the government he would be writing not only his own political obituary but that of his party too. Make no mistake about it.
