It is a pity that in this country there is no reliable and satisfactory fire fighting system. The municipal committees and municipal corporations are supposed to provide fire fighting service to the citizens . Up till now these Bodies have failed miserably in discharging this important civic function on their part. Small wonder one witnesses almost daily loss of human lives and property as a result of fire incidents.
Recently fire broke out in the prime minister secretariat building in Islamabad which was controlled with great difficulty . If this is the condition in the federal capital one can well imagine what it would be like in lesser cities and towns!
Many multi-storeyed buildings have come up in major towns of the country and one wonders whether or not adequate snorkels and other relevant equipment is available to extricate the inmates of these high rises should they are trapped in any fire incident! The prime minister is in favour of constructing multi-storeyed buildings for providing flats in them to the house less millions of the country. The question naturally striking the mind of every allottee in these high rise buildings would be:is there going to be a safe exit for me in case my flat caught fire?
One can say without any fear of contradiction that in nine out of ten cases the local government institutions responsible for extinguishing the break out of fire in their municipal limits do not have fire brigades and in case in one or two odd cases, which might have fire fighting equipment, they are not properly equipped nor the staff employed by them are sufficiently trained for the purpose. This is in sharp contrast to many western countries where firemen service has been modelled on the pattern of armed forces and the fire brigades are ever ready round the clock to meet any eventuality.
