Among the most vibrant and dynamic personalities I have known is Majid Khan, son of Jahangir Khan, cousin of Imran Khan and Javed Burki, father of Bazid Khan and arguably the most attractive batsman this country has produced. He was a hero of the generations of 1960s and 1970s, and he holds a record which no one will ever beat. He scored one-day International Cricket’s first century, an innings played against England which in the words of the-then prince of cricket commentators, Christopher Martin Jenkins, was a kind of exhibition of strokeplay that could never vanish from memory.
I started knowing Majid Khan during the days of our cricket team’s revolt against the captaincy of Miandad in the late 1982. Majid Khan had led that revolt as a result of which Imran Khan was awarded captaincy, who dropped Majid Khan from the team for loss of form and his fabulous magic touch. Majid Khan resigned from International Cricket.
We became friends. I remember offering him a key position in Midas which certainly pleased him.
“I am certainly happy to learn you rate my ability so highly”, he said. “But I am going to Islamabad for an important meeting the outcome of which will guide my future course of action.”
The same month Majid Khan had joined the PTV as Controller Sports.
In the last sixteen years, we have not met very often, but whenever we meet we meet quite warmly and enthusiastically. Same was the case last night in Zaman Park where the marriage of his niece, and the daughter of Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khan, with my first cousin Abdul Qayyum Hajiazi’s son Moiz brought us together after a long long time.
We don’t hold exactly the same views on politics.
“I leave a question for you to ponder upon, so that we have a subject for discussion when we meet next”, he said: “Suppose we have peace between Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Bangladesh etc in the region, what will be our Military’s role in our national affairs?”
“Quite unlikely”. I said smiling “yet a good subject for debate.”
You are truly an idealist Majid Khan! For peace in this region, American thinking will have to go in exactly the opposite direction, and Hindutva will have to vanish from the sub-continent!
