ISLAMABAD, May 26 (DNA): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday spoke to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and congratulated him on victory of his Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the parliamentary elections, the Foreign Ministry said.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on early Friday announced the victory of the BJA in the 17th general elections concluded on 24.
“Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (Sunday) and congratulated him on his party’s electoral victory in the Lok Sabha elections in India,” the Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal said.
The spokesman said in a statement that the Prime Minister expressed his desire for both countries to work together for the betterment of their peoples. “Reiterating his vision for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia, the Prime Minister said he looked forward to working with Prime Minister Modi to advance these objectives,” the spokesman said. Earlier Prime Minister Khan wrote on twitter that he “looks forward to working with the Indian Prime Minister for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia.” Prime Minister Khan has spoken to Narendra Modi amid tensions escalated between the two uneasy neighbors following a suicide attack on Indian security personnel in Indian-occupied Kashmir on Feb. 14, which killed over 40 paramilitary troopers. In late February India claimed its warplanes struck a camp of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group in northwest Pakistan, which is blamed by New Delhi for the deadly Kashmir attack. In what to be seen a tit-for-tat action, Pakistan army said its air force bombed Indian targets in Indian-held Kashmir, a day later of the Indian strike. Pakistan army had said it shot down two Indian fighter jets along the LoC and captured an Indian pilot, who was later handed over to Indian authorities. -DNA
